The most common mistakes made when moving to a new house… and how to avoid them!

Moving house is one of the most stressful life events we will experience. Even if you have previous experience, every move is unique and challenging. We know that there is lots to remember and mistakes are easy to make. So, to help make your move go as smoothly as possible, we have devised a list of the top 5 mistakes people make when moving and how to avoid them:

Mistake #1: Packing heavy items in big boxes.

It is tempting to pack as many items as possible into one box to reduce the number of boxes you need to buy. However, failure to distribute heavy items, such as books, can cause the box to break or result in injury to you and removal staff.

If you have decided to do your own packing, don’t risk buying cheap boxes; we can supply you with the necessary robust double walled boxes. Firstly, place a heavy item at the bottom of the box and then fill remaining space with lighter goods. Use strong removal tape to seal your box both on the top and the bottom- never just fold the flaps over!

Mistake #2: Leaving packing till the last minute

Packing will ALWAYS take longer than predicted! It is likely to take several weeks rather than days so make sure to start packing two or three weeks in advance. Keep only essential items aside until the last day or two.

By rushing your packing, you lose out on time to declutter your belongings. Whether you sell unwanted possessions or donate them to charity, sorting them out before the move will save you time and money.

Starting early also allows you to be organised. Clearly label each box with its destined room and whether it contains fragile or heavy items. This makes the move efficient and prevents you from having to open every box to find what you need!

Mistake #3: Not keeping essential items accessible

One moment you know where all your paperwork is and the next you are peeling open your sealed boxes to find vital documents. Misplaced papers cause complications and delays during your move. House sale and removal documents can often end up being swept into a box alongside other paperwork, so remember to keep these important documents aside in a safe and accessible place.

Use a clear plastic box to create an “Essentials Container”. This should be kept with you, so it is easy to find when you arrive at your new home. Put in it any items which you will need immediately, such as your phone charger, toothbrush, toilet paper and, most importantly, the kettle.

Mistake #4: Forgetting about household utilities

We all have so many household bills it can be easy to forget to change all of them. Ensure you have read your utility meters before leaving and arrange for transfer of your services with the appropriate companies. Cancel any deliveries, such as milk or newspapers, to your old house. Remember to transfer any television services you subscribe to and check that there are the relevant connections in your new house.

Mistake #5: Not considering where we can park our van

This seems obvious, but many people forget to make sure that we can park close enough to their home. Good access to your premises is essential as it saves valuable time on moving day. The less the distance that your belongings need to be transported between your house and the van the better.
